Don’t always rely on quantizing (part 1)

Although quantizing is a great thing, if you want to sound less electronic and more live, quantizing is your worst enemy.  The sound of quantization is about perfection, while live sound is about the imperfections and small details and differences between each hit. There are many strategies about how to use quantizing, but you should mix quantizing in with unquantized hits, to give your track a “liver” sound.

    great tip. it took me years and years of making beats on old drum machines in the late 1990’s to realize that the reason I couldn’t get my beats to sound like James Brown’s drum breaks, was because I relied on my 1/16 note quantize.
